Foot Orthoses

What are they?

· Foot orthoses are used to support, align or to correct a deformity or a biomechanical imbalance of the feet.

· When used appropriately, foot orthoses can reduce pain from an overuse injury, protect the feet from pressure ulcers or callous, reduce fatigue.

· Foot orthoses can also help to realign and alleviate pain in the knees, hips and back.

· Custom foot orthoses are made from plaster impressions of the feet held in a neutral position with appropriate corrections or accomodations made.

· Custom foot orthoses are designed according to the individual needs of the patient. Various materials are used in different configurations based on the clinical assessment.

· Factors affecting design and material choice include: pathology, activity level of patient and footwear.
